So, your New Year's resolution was to start using DATUM to mine on OCEAN? Maybe you want to exercise your sovereignty as a miner and mine more of those tasty inscriptions. Maybe you want to get the lower pool fees. Maybe you just want to see your name in lights on mempool.space. Hey, we're not here to judge: we're here to help.
After setting up his own DATUM server, Rob stumbled across a great deal on some dedicated servers and built a bunch more. Since he only needs one server to handle his massive hoard of mining hardware, one of the others could be yours.
To start, we're offering two basic solutions. We have a few of the first solution ready to go immediately, and we're testing the second now.
Price: $42/month
Specs: Dedicated server in Dallas, TX with Xeon E3-1230v2, 16 GB RAM, 1 gbps connection
Capacity: We tested with ~700 miners (from a Bitaxe Ultra to an S21 Pro, and everything in between) doing over 70 PH before we ran out of money to rent more hashrate. If you're such a macher that you really need to handle more than that, you're one of the biggest miners on OCEAN and we should probably discuss a custom solution anyway.
Who: At today's hashprice, anyone with over 2.5 PH should save enough fees (at 1%) vs. mining directly on OCEAN's pool (at 2%) to pay for this server. You're even free to split the cost with a few friends, if you can agree on the options for constructing blocks and what cool name to put in your tag‡.
Price: $21/month
Specs: VPS or low-end dedicated server
Capacity: To be determined. But we expect it to handle well over 10 PH without breaking a sweat.
Who: At today's hashprice, anyone with over 1.25 PH should save enough fees (at 1%) vs. mining directly on OCEAN's pool (at 2%) to pay for this server. You're also free to split the cost with a few friends, if you can agree on the options for constructing blocks and what cool name to put in your tag‡. We haven't actually tested with 1,250 Bitaxen, but we'd like to try.
† Minimum Viable Product
‡ There is an edge case where the server may fall back briefly to mining to a single address when it's unable to obtain a coinbase split from OCEAN. So you should also agree what address will get the payout in the unlikely event that you happen to mine a block at that time.
Since this minimum viable product is intended for a few early adopters, we don't have a slick sign-up process. Just get in touch by one of the following methods (preferably email) and we'll sort out payment and the configuration of your box:
We've tested the Dallas location using miners throughout North America and Europe (excluding Russia), and performance was acceptable. But, if you want a gateway in a different location, we're happy to discuss how we can help. We can also register and host a domain for you, or configure the gateway to use one that you set up, if you'd like to use a hostname instead of a bare IP address.
The datum_gateway software is an early beta, and our configuration of it and other software is, likewise, a work-in-progress. Things may break. Don't point a miner at the gateway unless you also have a backup pool configured. Even then, things may break. This product is for adventurous early adopters and Szarka Networks does not represent, warrant, or guarantee that the service is fit for any particular purpose. Park and lock it. Not responsible.
Also note that, in using the gateway, you necessarily reveal your IP address to the operator (just as you would to the mining pool). If that information is sensitive, you may prefer to use a VPN connection and/or ask us to disable the web interface (which is protected with a simple password). FYI, we also maintain a warrant canary.
